Christina Matheny, was the daughter of Elijah and Mary Davis Matheny. Christina and her husband Absalom had eight children, five sons and three daughters. Like many Southern yeoman farm families of their time, they migrated west, farming for a while in Tennessee and Arkansas, before taking up land in Fannin County soon after Texas was admitted to the Union in 1845. From 1850 until Absalom Hicks' death in May 1877, they farmed land near the English Fort at Bonham, Texas. Following his death, Absalom Hicks' widow, Christina, received a widow's pension for his service in the War of 1812. She lived to be 91, spending her last years in the home of her eldest daughter, Anna Melissa in Farmersville. She died on April 5, 1897. Both Absalom and Christina Hicks are buried in the IOOF Cemetery there.

Celebrates Her 90th Birthday, Surrounded by Her Descendants.
Farmersville, Collin Co., Tex., Aug. 18.—Mrs. Christine Hicks yesterday celebrated her 90th birthday at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Bane, by giving a dinner, which was prepared for the occasion by those of her children, grand and great grandchildren, who were present to the number of forty-four, together with the pastor of the Baptist church and his family. Mrs. Hicks, who was the central figure in the remarkable group or family of four generations, is yet in full possession of all her faculties, is remarkably strong and has now been attending three times daily service at the Baptist church, of which she has been a constant member for sixty-nine years. She is the mother of eight children, thirty-eight grandchildren and thirty-nine great grandchildren, or eighty-five descendants, only nine of whom are dead.
Mrs. Hicks came to Texas in 1850 and settled near the old English fort at Bonham, when Indians were plentiful and this then the wild frontier, and is thoroughly familiar with the scenes, dangers and privations incident to Texas' early history.
Upon this occasion, the celebration of her 90th birthday, Mrs. Hicks' face beamed with smiles, surrounded with a vast group of descendants, from the great-grand tiny infant to the aged son, all seemingly bent on making this one of the happiest moments of her life.
