Elmer was an orphan who was raised by Otha & Albert Smith from the age of 4 after he was chosen from an orphanage in Kentucky and was raised in Switzerland, Jefferson and Ohio Counties, Indiana.
Funeral services for Elmer C. Brown, 67, farmer, Rt. 2 Vevay, IN were conducted in the Detmer & Detmer Funeral Home in Rising Sun, Indiana on Wednesday, Oct. 1, 1969 at 2:00 P.M. with Brother Forrest Taylor officiating. Burial was in Rising Sun New Cemetery. Roy & Velma Manuel were the singers. Mr. Brown died at his home on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 28, 1969 where he suffered a heart attack. Survivors: wife, Lucy and 3 daughters; Mrs. Dortha Mae (Dot) Curry of Rising Sun; Marjorie (Jean) Tyler of Rt. 3 Madison, IN ; Mary Elizabeth (Libby) Markland of Rt.2 Rising Sun, IN ; Two sons: James E. Brown, Rt. 1 Vevay, IN ; Earl Wayne Brown, United States Air Force in Ft. Worth, Texas at Carswell Air Force Base. Three sons-in-law: Henry P. Mrs. Jean Tyler, Madison; Mrs. Dot Curry, Rising Sun; Mrs. Libby Markland, Rt. 2, Rising Sun; Sons: James, Vevay and Earl Wayne, Carswell Air Force Base, Ft. Worth, TX. Sons-in-Law; Henry "Pee Wee" Curry, Nelson "Sam" Markland and Herschel Tyler. A daughter-in-law, Marjorie Brown. Coming to Indiana at the age of 4, he spent most of his life in Jefferson, Ohio and Switzerland Counties, farming and doing construction work. He retired about seven years ago. He built his world around his family and home and was happiest when they were with him. Their joys and sorrows, the hard places and pleasant places in life were equally shared by him. He was a good husband, father, grandfather,great-grandfather, neighbor and friend. He will be missed by all who knew him. Although his health had not been good for some time, yet his passing was sudden, unexpected and indeed a dark cloud on the horizon of life. Many friends and other relatives share the loss and sorrow of his passing with his devoted wife, the five children, three sons-in-law, one daughter-in-law, 15 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. God understands your sorrow, He sees the falling tear and whispers " I am with thee", then falter not, nor fear. God understands your heartache, He knows the bitter pain; O, trust Him in the darkness, You cannot trust in vain.
