Robert L. "Bob" Brumley, age 89, of Castroville, TX, passed away Mar. 31, 2009 in San Antonio, TX. Bob was born Sept. 24, 1919 in Edinburg, TX, to the late William B. and Carrie Umlaud Brumley. Bob was a 1938 graduate of Edinburg High School. He recieved a full athletic scholarship to Rice university where for 3 years, until like so many young patriots, he joined the Navy at the end of his junior year. While assigned to Norman, Oaklahoma for Naval training, Bob took enough classes at OU to play football and help them win their 1943 conference championship before serving aboard the USS Cabot. After WWII Bob finished his Bachelor's degree at Rice, which was one of his proudest moments. He went on to play for the NFL as a wingback (now called Quarterback) for the Cleveland Rams during the first half of the 1945 season and the Detroit Lions the second half. Success in the insurance business prior to the 1946 season ended his NFL career. Clada May Jones of Temple Texas and Bob were married on Aug. 8, 1947 in Edinburg. Clada and Bob eventually settled in Houston. Bob was an avid golfer having been coached by Jimmy Demaret. He retired from insurance in 1985 and moved, with Clada, to Castroville from Houston in 1988. He and Clada were active in the Baptist church. He is preceded in death by his wife, Clada May Jones Brumley.
