Amanda was the daughter of Dr. John Atwood Tomlinson and his wife Elizabeth Morris Thompson.

Amanda married her first husband, John F. Bower, on January 14, 1863 in Mercer County, Kentucky. John died on February 1, 1869 in Key West, Florida of apoplexy.

Amanda's sister Caroline was the second wife of Brigadier Gen. William Worth Belknap. Caroline died December 29,1870. Three years later, on December 11, 1873, Amanda married Belknap.

Their daughter Alice was born on November 28, 1874, in Washington D.C.

After her death in Los Angeles, CA, Amanda was cremated and her remains were removed to Arlington Cemetery on August 24, 1917.

Mr. C. D. Thompson has received a letter from the wife of General Weston, of New York, telling him of the death, from apoplexy, of Mrs. Amanda Belknap in Los Angeles, Cal. Mrs. Belknap was the widow of the late Secretary of War Belknap and was twin sister of Captain James A. Tomlinson and was the last member of the well known Tomlinson family, that formerly resided here. The remains will be cremated and buried at Arlington, Va., beside her husband.
