William Green was said to have been born at the fort at Bryan Station Kentucky. That was the location where the raid by a combined force of Indians and forces sympathetic to the British took place that led to the Battle of Blue Licks where his grandfather Jervis Green(1750-1782) was killed along side of Israel Boone, Daniel's son a few days later.

He was a good friend of Abraham Lincoln. He eventually became a partner in what be began as the Lincoln and Berry Store. He purchased the inventory of another store and sold it to Mr. Lincoln.

When Mr. Lincoln was forced to surrender his horse to pay a debt, Uncle Billy surrendered one of his horses in it's place.

According to Lincoln biographer Michael Burlingame, William G. Greene was one of the concerned friends worrying about Mr. Lincoln's health and well being after the death Ann Rutledge, and was quoted as saying, "after this sudden of one whom his heart and soul dearly and loved" Lincoln's friends were " compelled to keep watch and ward over Mr. Lincoln." Many of his friends thought he might be suicidal.
Carl Sandburg referred to him as him Bill Green when describing the same series of events.

It was Uncle Billy's first cousin Judge Bowling Greene(1786-1842) who finally took Mr. Lincoln into his home until he was well.

William Graham Greene Benway (1886-1961) was named after William Graham Green after he died in 1894. Both families were related and descended from close friends of Abraham Lincoln. William GG Benway was second cousin to William G. Green.

Uncle Billy's wife Louisa Hurt White was the aunt of Will Benway's wife Martha Robertson Benway (1884-1975) so everyone called him Uncle Billy even when he was actually a cousin.

William Graham Greene was also the first cousin of William Mentor Graham (1800-1894) Abraham Lincoln's teacher and friend.

In 1857 W.G. Greene was one of the founders of Tallula, Illinois. Tallula was a Native American word meaning something like soft falling rain. It may have been the name of a young girl.
