Elsie Irene Hoagland, 94, St. Joseph, passed away Thursday, April 2, 2009, at her home of nine years: Vintage Park Assisted Living Community.
Elsie was born Feb. 16, 1915, in Tarkio, Mo., to James and Ellen (Quinton) Fox.
She was the youngest of 13 siblings: William, Charlie, Walter, Effie, Other Lee, Hobart, Miney, Mary, Gracy, Arthur, Jessie and Ora, all of which have preceded her in death.
Elsie lived most of her life in St. Joseph where she graduated from Methodist School of Nursing in 1936 and practiced private duty until 1941.
She served in staff and supervisory positions at the St. Joseph State Hospital through 1946. In 1959 she joined the visiting nurse staff, which became part of the Buchanan County Health Department. In 1974 she became nurse in charge of the City's Tuberculosis Clinic and in 1976 she advanced to supervisor of the Public Health Clinic. She was very dedicated to nursing and spent 22 years as a Public Health Nurse and a total of 37 years in active nursing.
Elsie married Robert C. Hoagland on June 20, 1937; Bob preceded her in death on Feb. 16, 1996.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; and son, Roger Hoagland.
Survivors: son, Ron Hoagland and his wife Kathy, St. Joseph; granddaughter, Sara Hart and her husband Eddie, Westwood, Kan.; grandson, Jeff Hoagland, Colorado; great-grandchildren, Annamarie Christina and Katherine Elise Hart.
Other survivors include two special nieces, Barbara Jones and her husband Gary, Lake Ariel, Penn.; and Sharley Branson and her husband Lloyd, Rock Port, Mo.; and the caring friends and staff of Vintage Park.
Services: 1 p.m. Monday, Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory. Interment: Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory.
