James Marcom Wilder was born 1872 in Marks Creek (Knightdale), Wake County, NC, the 3rd of 7 known surviving children (4 boys/3 girls) born to farmers Ashley Wilder and his (2nd) wife, Martha Altena Bell.
He was the paternal grandson of Samuel Wilder III and Martha Whitley of Marks Creek; and the gr-grandson of Samuel Wilder I and Frances Ervin of Franklin County, who later moved to Johnston County.
James' father, Ashley Wilder, had first married Dilly/Delly "Sallie" Gregory in 1844, by whom 11 known children were born. When she died about 1865, he married (2nd) in 1868 to Martha Altena Bell, who was 22 years his junior. This marriage resulted in 7 more children being born, including James Marcom Wilder.
James was 37 years old on January 26, 1910 when he married 36-year old Emma Gertrude Pool, daughter of Calvin Pool and his (3rd) wife Elizabeth Margaret "Bettie" Jones, of St. Mary's.
The couple resided on S. Person Street in Raleigh where James was a Dry Goods Merchant, but later moved to Hargett Street (c. 1920) when he worked for a clothing store. The couple became parents to 2 known children: Martha Elizabeth (1912-1912), and James Marcom Jr. (1914).
James died in 1942, about one month before his 70th birthday. His wife of 32 years survived him another 30 years, passing in 1972 at age 97.
