Arthur William Potter, was my Great Grandfather.

He was born in 1863, Earl Soham, Norfolk.

The third of five children (2nd son) of
Joseph Potter (1833) and Susanna Dent (1837-1904)

His siblings were:
Amelia (1858)
Alfred (1859)
Elizabeth (1865) &
Fanny (1868)

The 1881 UK census shows him as aged 18,
working as a Farm Servant (indoor) for the Hobson family, at Crockey Hill, Escrick, Deighton, Yorkshire.

On 9th October 1883, in Millingford, Norfolk,
he married Emma Elizabeth Rudd (1864)

They went on to raise 6 children:
Herbert 1885-1963),
Florence (1888-1974, my Grandmother)
Ellen (1891),
Rosa (1893),
Gertrude (1894) &
George (1899).

He farmed all his life, and died in 1919, in Norfolk.

Dear Ancestor,
Your tombstone stands among the rest;
Neglected and alone.
The name and the date are chiseled out
On polished, marbled stone.
It reaches out to all who cares
It is too late to mourn.
You did not know that I exist
You died and I was born.
Yet each of us are cells of you
In flesh, in blood, in bone.
Our blood contracts and beats a pulse
Entirely not our own.

Dear Ancestor, the place you filled
One hundred years ago
Spreads out among the ones you left
Who would have loved you so.
I wonder if you lived and loved,
I wonder if you knew
That someday I would find this spot,
And come to visit you.
