Vanderhorst served five years in the Confederate Army as a staff officer of General Whiting. Loyalty in all things was one of his most touching characteristics. None were ever more loyal than he to friend and family. Again and again was his fidelity to his friends tested and proved. So as the year rolled on the circle of those who loved him grew wider and wider. In the planting interests of the seaboard, Major Vanderhorst maintained a lively interest, and even the laborers whom he employed, clinging to him through the alienating influences of emancipation and reconstruction, will unite with his own people and his widowed wife and bereaved children in mourning his loss.

Arnoldus was killed by an accidental discharge of his rifle while hunting.
