The family moved to Newton Co, MO in 1879 because of Lucinda's health. Her husband purchased almost 700 acres of farm land in Granby & by 1882 was operating a mill in Hickory Creek. Years later he sold the mill to his son, Allen. They were living in Neosho when Washington died on January 28, 1892.

The following article was published in The Newton County News on Feb. 18, 1892:
"HICKORY CREEK
Mrs. W. West, who has been very sick for a long time has recovered enough to be taken out to her son's, John West, where she is getting along as well as can be expected."

Lucinda died on September 11, 1902, in the home of her daughter, Lina Casey. Her obituary follows:

"SEPT 18, 1902
OBITUARY OF MRS. LUCINDA WEST
Mrs. Lucinda West died at the home of Mr. T. Casey, three and one half miles northwest of Newtonia, Newton county, Mo. On September 11th, 1902. Mrs. West was born in North Carolina April 16th, 1831. Moved to Indiana with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Staley; she there grew to womanhood, was married to Mr. Washington West April 18, 1852. To this union were born four sons and three daughters. They moved to Newton county, Mo., in October, 1879. Mr. West and two of the girls have preceded her to the Spirit land.

Sister West was converted when young, has lived a godly life ever since. She was one among the few mothers that could control her boys, which speaks louder than words for her life. Sister West leaves four sons and one daughter, with a host of friends to mourn their loss. We feel we have lost a mother, a friend, a neighbor. To know Sister West was to love her. While we mourn our loss, we believe our loss is her eternal gain. She often expressed a willingness to depart this life and go to her home on high, where she would be with her Savior and the loved ones of long ago. Thank God for the Christian hope some sweet day we will all meet by and by where, 'there will be no more pain, no more death, nor crying, for god shall wipe away all tears from our eyes.'

May God bless the dear bereaved family and bind up the broken hearts and save the unsaved one that they may all meet in the sweet by and by. The funeral services were held at the home of Bro. T. Casey September 13th, 1902, by the writer, after which her remains were laid in the Neosho cemetery to await the resurrection morn.
