Seth's father had first married Polly Sturdivant of Wake County in 1815, and by her had 3 known children. Polly died 1819-1824, and Caleb married (2nd) Lizzie Averyt, by whom 8 more children were born. Seth's mother died about 1840 when he was about 11 years old, and his father married for the 3rd time to Fannie A. Smith of Wake County, by whom 3 more children were born.
Seth married Mary Catherine Byrd of Johnston County on January 13, 1859 and began farming in Smithfield Township.
The couple would have 8 known children:

When Civil War erupted in 1861, the 32-year old farmer left his wife and infant daughter to enlist with the NC 46th, Co. E. At war's end, he returned to Johnston County and farmed in the Pleasant Grove area, but by 1880 had relocated to St. Mary's (Garner) in Wake County, where the family remained.
Seth was widowed in 1886 when his wife of 27 years passed at age 43. He survived another 11 years, passing in 1897 at age 68.
