Funeral Service: 10:30 A.M. Friday, August 10, 2007 at the First Presbyterian Church in Beatrice, NE.

Stella G. Carey, age 100 years, of Adams, formerly of Beatrice died Monday morning, August 6, 2007 at the Gold Crest Retirement Center in Adams. She was born Sept. 15, 1906 at DeWitt and was a 1924 graduate of DeWitt High School. She attended a summer session at the University Of Nebraska and taught rural schools in the DeWitt area for four years. Stella and Thomas G. Carey were married on Sept. 12, 1928 in Beatrice. They lived on a farm near DeWitt until 1931 when they moved to a farm near Adams. In 1974 they moved to Beatrice and in 1998 she moved to Gold Crest Retirement Center in Adams. She was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, and Vesper Chapter #9 of the Order Of Eastern Star, all of Beatrice. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, gardening, social activities, and traveling.

Stella is survived by her son, Donald E. Carey and wife Mildred of Syracuse, NE; daughters, Doris F. DeBoer and husband Roger of Beatrice; and Wilma J. Hoeven and husband Jon of Omaha; by eight grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, one great great granddaughter, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas G. Carey (1988); by her parents, Frank and Pearl (Hebb) Shumard; brothers, Lawrence and Willard Shumard, and a sister, Ethel Tuma.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 10, 2007 at the First Presbyterian Church, Beatrice, Rev. Kelly Karges officiating. Burial will be at the Lincoln Memorial Park. The body will lie in state at the Griffiths Hovendick Chapel on Thursday, August 9, 2007 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.; and at the church one hour preceding the service. A memorial has been established to the Centenary United Methodist Church and the Gold Crest Retirement Center and Don and Bev Ewer in charge. Messages of condolence may be sent to [email protected].
