Roland was the fourth of nine children born to Edward Thomas Chittenden and Ida Jane Bigelow of Yuba County, California. Both the Chittenden and Bigelow familes's progenitors immigrated to the American colonies in the 1600s.

Roland married first to Cordelia Alberta Reed on 6 November 1927 in Glenn County, California. They had at least five children. Roland and Cordelia were still married in 1940. Roland's 1950 Census record has not yet been found, but I believe they divorced before 1950, or in the early part of the decade. Both remarried, Roland to Dollie Wommack Hubbard, and Cordelia to Charles Maben Sr.
