During the summer of 1861, shortly after the outbreak of the Civil War, Sidney Sutton heeded the call of his country by enlisting as a member of the Indiana Volunteer Infantry. He died 14 months later in an army hospital in St. Louis, leaving his widow Mary (Scott) Sutton and three sons, Jacob W., T. Alonzo, and Albert S.
