Clarence had been inducted into the Army at Camp Dodge, along with a contingent from Marshall County.

On Sunday October 13, 1918, his parents were notified that their son was seriously ill with pneumonia. They left immediately for Camp Dodge to be with their son. His father returned home after being assured his sons's condition had improved. His mother remained with her son until he passed away at 3:30 am. on Tuesday.

He had grown to manhood in our midst, being associated with his father and brothers in farming and livestock raising. The death of this fine young man, little more than a month in the service has saddened and shocked this whole community. He was a man with a genial sunny disposition, which made him a favorite with those whom he came in contact.

He was born the second son and child of seven children on the White's home place.

He was a member of the Methodist Church and the Full Moon Masonic Lodge of Melbourne.

His funeral was held from the family farm rural Rhodes with full Masonic rites.
