Joseph Kinney was the son of Didymus Kinney of Dutchess Co., New York. Didymus was a veteran of the American Revolution. His wife is only known by her first name, Eva. Eva was probably the mother of Joseph.

Joseph married Priscilla Richmond in about the year 1803 in Chenango Co., New York. Eventually He took his family to Buffalo, Erie Co., New York, where most of his children were born.

His son, Lavalette Kinney, wrote, "...My father name was Joseph. My mother maiden name Percillia Richmond as nere as I can recerlect.
