Shirley Simons, Sr was a prominent architect in Tyler and surrounding East Texas area. He graduated from Rice Institute in 1919 with a BS in architecture. After practicing in Houston with William Ward Watkin, founder of architeture dept at Rice in 1912. While at Rice, he met Mollie Mantooth, of Lufkin, whom he married in 1920. Simons moved to Lufkin in 1922 to establish his own practice and by the late 20's they had moved to Tyler, TX where he practiced til his death. Eventually, his 3 sons joined the architecure practice: Shirley Simons, Jr., Edwin Mantooth Simons, and Watson Townes Simons.
