John H. Barber, 82, of 1010 Front St., in Hayti, died Thursday morning at the Coatesville Hospital after a long illness.

He was born in Hume, Va., a son of the late John Henry Sr. and Elizabeth Dowe Barber.

He had resided in the Coatesville area for the past 55 years.

He worked for about 40 years as a shearman for Lukens Steel Company, retiring a number of years ago.

He belonged to the Lukens Veteran's Guild.

He was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church of Passtown and chairman of its Board of Deacons for 50 years.

He also was superintendent of the curch's Sunday School Department for 35 years.

Surviving besides his widow, Mrs. Margaret Wilson Barber, is: a son, Anthony D. of Coatesville; five daughters, Janie E., wife of James Conway, Hattie C., wife of William Butler, Ella L., wife of Clarence Wilkerson of Downingtown; 17 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the services from the First Baptist Church of Passtown, Barber Ave., on Tuesday, Nov. 2, at 1 p.m. Interment in New Evergreen Cemetery. Friends may call at the church Monday evening, 7 to 9 o'clock.
