Earl R. Sutherlin, 98, of Bloomington, Indiana, passed away Monday, March 23, 2009, at Community North Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Earl was born March 7, 1911, in Mitchell, Indiana, to Robert and Cora Sutherlin. Mr. Sutherlin was preceded in death by his first wife, Ophelia (Fender) Sutherlin and his second wife, Helen (Fuller) Sutherlin. He is survived by his son, Richard Sutherlin, and 4 grandchildren.

Upon graduation from Bloomington High School, Mr. Sutherlin began a career in photography that would last 2 decades. He managed Wiles Drug Store Photo Lab and became an accomplished commercial photographer. "Uncle Earl," a pseudonym used on the TV show "Hayloft Frolic," was the first television cameraman in Indiana and worked at WTTV studios in Bloomington. At various times during his life, he ventured into the areas of marathon dancing, clowning and Hollywood bit acting.

His community and civic involvement included serving as Clerk of the Monroe County Circuit Court for 8 years and Monroe County Recorder for 8 years. He also worked as an investigator for the Attorney General of Indiana.

Mr. Sutherlin was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He also was a member of the Masonic Monroe Lodge, Elks Lodge and the Fraternal Order of Police. A lifelong resident of Bloomington, he had been retired for the past 35 years. All through life Earl always strived and succeeded to never lose touch with the small-city life.

Private chapel services will be held at Valhalla Memory Gardens with Dr. George Purnell officiating. Deremiah-Frye Mortuary, Greene & Harrell Chapel are in charge of arrangements.
