Mr. Albert F. "Buck" Smith Jr., 75, of Valley died Thursday morning, April 18, 2002 at George H. Lanier Memorial Hospital in Valley.

Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, April 20 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Shawmut with Dr. Jerome King officiating. Burial will follow in Shawmut Cemetery.

Mr. Smith is survived by his daughter, Denise (Billy) Milner of Valley; two sons, Chris (Lisa) Smith of Valley and Bobby Smith of Huguley; five grandchildren, Michael Sides, Kelli (Shane) Bryant, Mikey Smith, Carlee Smith and Rachael Smith; five great-grandchildren, Jake Sides, Morgan Sides, Shane Bryant, Brendan Bryant and Baylee Bryant; two sisters, Mildred Young and Janelle Simpler, both of Valley; and a special friend, Gladys Bolt.

Born Aug. 31, 1926 in Shawmut, Mr. Smith was a veteran of World War II, where he served in the U.S. Navy. He was a retired employee of WestPoint Stevens Shawmut Mill with over 48 years of service with the company. He was well known in the Valley area as a baseball and softball umpire, which he had done for 28 years.

Mr. Smith was a member of First Baptist Church of Shawmut. He was preceded in death by his wife, Cleo N. Smith; his granddaughter, Amanda Smith; and his sister, Mary Jo Gunnells. He was the son of the late Correll Champion Smith and Albert F. Smith Sr.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Challenge to Build Fund at First Baptist Church of Shawmut in his memory.

The family will receive friends Friday, April 19 from 6 until 8 p.m. at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home in Valley.
