"Near Boone – Shelby Youth Dies in Wreck



Boone – Steve Dixon Blanton, 18 of 421 Grover St., drowned in a creek near Boone Friday night after being thrown from a car in which he was a passenger.



Watauga County Coroner Barney Hampton said Blanton was pronounced dead on arrival at Watauga Hospital in Boone. Hampton said cause of death was by drowning.



Another Shelbian was reported as the drive of the car which went out of control on U. S. 321 five miles south of Boone, and ran down an embankment into Middle Fork Creek.



The wreck occurred at 11 p.m.



Blanton was thrown from the car into the creek.



The driver was not seriously injured, according to reports.



Blanton was the son of Mr. and Mrs. David Blanton. A 1966 graduate of Shelby High School, he was employed by Harris-Teeter Supermarkets. Blanton has attended Southern Business College.



He was a member of the U. S. Naval Reserve Surface Division and was scheduled to enter active duty on Nov. 1.



Funeral services will be held at 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Central Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dwight Mullis officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery.



The body will remain at Palmer's Mortuary until time for the services. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 until 9 o'clock tonight."
