Green Berry Payne was born 10 Aug 1835 to Asa Payne and Nancy Hollinshed. He served in the War Between the States in the 54th GA Co A Infantry. He was captured at Murphysboro, TN and sent to POW camp at Louisville, KY.
He married Abigail Harkins on 17 Dec 1855 at Fanning Co., GA by Wm. E Mull Minister of the Gospel.
He died 13 Aug 1901 in Swain Co., NC. A sign at the cemetery states that Green Berry founded the Payne Town Cemetery. Green Berry Payne was buried in Payne Town Cemetery which is located in Swain Co., NC and in Smokey Mountains National Park
