LINCOLNTON — Mr. Charles Edward Beal, 90, died March 27, 2009.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Mattie Long Beal; his parents, Charles L. and Lily Mae Beal; brothers, Wade, Yates, Elmer and Frantz Beal; and his son-in-law, Donald Chapman.

Mr. Beal served in the Army in World War II in Germany and France. A lifelong resident of Lincolnton, he was self-employed with C.E. Beal Floor Covering until his retirement. Charlie and Mattie enjoyed traveling, including trips to Europe, Israel and Brazil. Charlie was active in his church having served in numerous offices. He was Chairman of Ushers at First United Methodist Church and he was a member of the Men's Bible Class. He was a dedicated Boy Scout leader and served as Scoutmaster for many years. In his service to Scouting he provided a positive influence for many young men. Charlie's spare time was often spent fishing, gardening and enjoying time spent with family.

He is survived by daughters, Suzanne Chapman, Peggy Sibert and husband Wayne, all of Lincolnton; Cathy Bayliss and husband Jack, of Greensboro; son Eddie Beal and wife Janet, of Lincolnton; grandchildren, Greg Chapman, Brett Chapman, Karen Berkheimer, Chad Sibert*, David Sibert**, Kimberly Beal, Matt Bayliss, Katie Bayliss, Will Bayliss; and great-grandchildren Spencer, Jessica and Jackson Sibert, Taylor Berkheimer and Allison Chapman.

His funeral was 3 p.m. Sunday, March 29, 2009 at First United Methodist Church, conducted by his ministers, Rev. Dr. Michael Gehring and Rev. Harold Leatherman. The family received friends 1:45 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. Sunday at the church. Burial followed in Hollybrook Cemetery.

He was greatly loved and will be missed by his friends and family. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, Stained Glass Window Fund, 201 E. Main Street, Lincolnton, NC 28092.
