Death Claims James Brown
Retired Cattleman Succumbs at 84

A retired cattleman, farmer and businessman, James Samuel Brown 84, died Tuesday in a local hospital. He moved to Portland two years ago and resided at 1418 S.E. 43rd Avenue. Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Colonial mortuary, with entombment at Portland Memorial. Mr. Brown was born January 6.1868 in Herd county, GA and moved to Oregon 64 years ago. He took up a homestead at Juniper Flats, OR where he was instrumental in putting through telephone lines for farmers, and also aided in obtaining irrigation.

Stage Coach Driven
He drove the first stage coach from The Dalles to the Warm Springs Indian reservation. He was a farmer and cattle raiser, specializing in Aberdeen Angus cattle. Upon his retirement, he was appointed vice president of the Mauin state bank. Survivors include the widow, Marion: daughter, Mrs. Charles Gable, both of Portland; sister, Mrs. Mollie Cooley, Marietta, GA. , and stepson James Lester Moerial Sr., Redwood City, Cal.

The following information was received from Jean a family member.
"the daughter they mentioned in the obit (Mrs. Charles Gable) is the adopted daughter of Mary and James - Jenny Crane Brown Gable - born in Nebraska. The family came to Oregon and Father Lewis died and left mother with six children. The Crane family lives in The Dalles 1900 – 1910. Jenny is then with Mary & James Brown. The crane family is still in The Dalles in 1910 but Jenny is not with them. She married Charles Gabel."

Although his name is on the gravestone from Kelly Cemetery where his first wife is buried, there are no burial records for J. S. Brown in Kelly Cemetery. He is buried at Portland Memorial Mausoleum.
