Lola May Rockwell
1906-2003

Lola May Rockwell, 96, of Garfield Table, west of Arnold, died Friday, January 31, 2003 at Linden Court in North Platte.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 4, at the Arnold United Methodist Church, with Pastor Doug Smith officiating.

Lola May Rockwell was born February 7, 1906 to Mark and Aura P. Fox Smith at Garfield Table. She attended grade school at Garfield School and graduated from Logan County High School at Gandy in 1924.

On September 24, 1924, Lola married Orville Lloyd Rockwell at Julesburg, Colorado. The first year and a half they lived on a farm south of Gandy near Orville's parents. In March, 1926, they moved to the family farm on Garfield Table, which was homesteaded by her grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Cyrus Fox. Lola lived there for 75 years, 29 of them alone after Orville's death. Lola then moved to Linden Court in June, 2000. Lola and Orville raised three children together.

Loa was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, and her family was very important to her. She was a 4-H leader for 25 years while her children were in 4-H. Lola was an active member of Busy Country Homemaker's Extension Club for over 59 years, and on the Lincoln county Extension Board several years.

She baked and served food to the soldiers going through North Platte at the North Platte Canteen during World War II. Lola was a member and officer of the Garfield Church Ladies Aid. Lola and her family were honored as one of the 100 year Centennial Homestead Honorees.

In life, she enjoyed gardening and flowers in her yard. Sewing, crocheting fancy doilies, afghans and doing craft items of which she gave away to family and friends. She continued to crochet afghans from memory even after she lost her eyesight.

Lola is survived by her children, Vonna Jeanne (Mrs. Josef A.) Jackson of Grand Island. Buford Claire (Ilene) Rockwell and Carolyn Sue (Mrs. Robert) Foran all of North Platte; grandchildren, Donna (Jaackdon) Sanders, of Grand Island, Kim Rockwell of North Platte, Darin Foran of Delta, Colorado, and Bobbi Sue (Foran) Gustason of North Platte; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by an infant sister, her sister, Lela Smith; her parents; her husband. Orville in 1975; and her sister Ethel Bloomquist in 1991.

A memorial has been established.
Burial was in the Arnold Cemetery.
