IONIE BLANKENSHIP HODGES
ABBEVILLE. . .Ionie "Nome" Blankenship Hodges, a resident of Abbeville, died early Saturday morning, March 28, 2009, in a Dothan hospital after an extended illness.. She was 87.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P. M. Monday, March 30, 2009, in the Holman-Abbeville Mortuary Chapel with Reverend Earl Hodges, Reverend Tom Chestnut and Reverend Jody Haddan officiating. Burial will follow in the Abbeville Memorial Cemetery-East.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 P. M. Sunday at the mortuary in Abbeville. At other times, the family will be at the home of a daughter, Shirley Watford, 3288 County Road 46, Abbeville.

Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, P.O. Box 1011, Dothan, AL 36302.

Mrs. Hodges was born and raised in the Bertha Community in Dale County, daughter of the late Eli Morgan "Doc" Blankenship and Winnie Riley Blankenship. She lived in Abbeville all her adult lifetime. Mrs. Hodges professed Jesus Christ as her Lord and Saviour at an early age at the Old Center United Methodist Church, near Newville. She lived her Christian convictions and raised her four children accordingly. She served as a member of the Disabled American Veterans Ladies Auxiliary for several years. Mrs. Hodges was a member of and thoroughly enjoyed the Abbeville Senior Citizens Center prior to her becoming totally disabled. She was a dedicated wife, mother and homemaker. Mrs. Hodges was preceded in death by her husband, Odis Hodges, a sister, Ethel Henderson and four brothers, Amos Blankenship, J.T. Blankenship, Avery Blankenship and Corby Blankenship.

Surviving relatives include three daughters, Jeanette Tharpe and husband, Roger Tharpe, Blue Springs, AL; Shirley Watford and husband, Johnny Watford, Abbeville, AL; Lynn Allen and husband, Reverend T.J. Allen, Headland, AL; a son, Reverend Earl Hodges and wife, Sylvia Hodges, Metairie, LA; a very special brother-in-law, Willie Henderson, Echo, AL; nine grandchildren, Penny Strickland and husband, Bryan Strickland and also Lisa Tharpe, all of Blue Springs, AL; David Watford and wife, Kim Watford, Dothan, AL; Jeffrey Watford and wife, Deborah Watford, Madison, AL; Mark Hodges, River Ridge, LA; Jonathan Elkins, Lindsey Elkins, Seth Allen and Miranda Allen, all of Headland, AL; eight great-grandchildren, M'Lynn, Claira and Wyatt Watford, all of Dothan, AL; Kayla and Chelsie Strickland, both of Blue Springs, AL; Lauren and Mackenzie Watford, both of Madison, AL; Emali Hodges, River Ridge, LA; a devoted caregiver, Estelle Blalock; several nieces and nephews.

The family expresses a special "thank you" for the wonderful care provided by Dr. Doug Jackson, Dr. Paola Bass and the 3 South nursing and support staff of Flowers Hospital.

Serving as active pallbearers will be David Watford, Jeffrey Watford, Mark Hodges, Jonathan Elkins, Gary Shelley, Billy Hancock, Seth Allen and Bryan Strickland.
