Jeannie entered this life on March 11, 1927 in Comanche, Oklahoma daughter of the late Jimmy D. and Arzola (Smothers) Burks. Her formative years were spent in the state of California. She worked for Douglas Aircraft for nineteen years in Lakewood, California and later owned and operated her own beauty shop. On August 8, 1987 in Yuma, Arizona she was united in marriage to Tommy L. Lea and together they have shared the last twenty-one years. For the last several years she and Tommy split their time between their homes in Grove, Oklahoma and Mecca, California.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Sherrie Owens; and a brother, J. Wade Burks.
Jeannie is survived by her husband, Tommy Lea of the home; a son, Kenneth Word and wife, Nora, of Golden Valley, Arizona; five grandchildren; six great grandchildren, one great great grandchild; two sisters, Janell Skillman of Yuma, Arizona and Jo Pruitt of Grove, Oklahoma; a brother, Jerry Burks of Gig Harbor, Washington; several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other family and friends.
Funeral services for Vera Imogene "Jeannie" Lea are 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 26, 2009 in the Anderson Chapel of the Ozark Funeral Homes with Joe Franta officiating. Burial will follow in the Butler Creek Cemetery near Sulphur Springs, Arkansas. Those honoring her life by serving as pallbearers are Audie Pruitt, Larry Styles, Jim Styles, Mitchell Styles, Bob Luckinbill and Phil Patterson. The family will receive friends on Thursday afternoon from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service in the funeral home chapel. Arrangements are under the personal care and direction of the Ozark Funeral Home in Anderson, Missouri.
