He was the third son of Richard Benjamin (Ben) and Janie Yawn Luke. I've been told he was greatly admired by all who knew him, you could hear his laugh clear across town, and he enjoyed music (played the banjo and "called" the local barn dances). He was not very tall but had a big moustache that covered a short upper lip. His daughter, Mary, said he would slip around & put fireplace ash on his moustache to cover the grey and he enjoyed twirling its ends to a point. On April 21, 1904 he married the love of his life, Julia Mims, the statuesque daughter of Franklin P. and Susan McDonald Mims. They were the parents of 12 children - Richard, Riley, Tillman, Mary (Paul), Roy, Geneva, Owen, Louise (Harper), and four died as infants. He died within three days of quick pneumonia. I am his granddaughter but he died before I was born. I've always believed we would've been great buddies, he and I.
