Funeral Today
Mrs. Josephine Rosabelle Vernon, 89, the last survivor of one of Texas' oldest native families. will be buried in West Oakwood Cemetery this afternoon beside her husband, Henry Vernon, whom she outlived 23 years.
Services for Mrs. Vernon will be held at 3 p. m. today at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Minnie Mae Shelton, 2304 West Twenty-sixth Street, North. Rev. R. E. Wilson, assisted by Rev. J. L. Collins, will officiate.
Mrs. Vernon died at Mrs Shelton's home at 9 a. m. Sunday after an illness of six weeks. Death resulted from complications of influenza.
Active pallbearers will be John Padgett, Albert Kern, J. W. Rhodes, Jesse Rhodes, Will Needham and Gus Jeter. Honorary pallbearers will be E. D. Smith, W. J. Jones, John Blevins, S. E. Humphrey and Lon Vasiler.
A brother and sister, who, with Mrs. Vernon, were considered the oldest of native families in Texas, died last year. The brother, Richard Boswell, Hearne, was 87, and Mrs. Martha Wooley, Cameron, the sister, was 91.
Mrs. Vernon's parents, natives of Georgia and Tennessee, came to Texas in covered wagons. They were residents of Burleson County for many years. Mrs. Vernon's husband was a Burleson County farmer.
Besides Mrs. Shelton, Mrs. Vernon is survived by three sons, J. W., Brownwood: T. P., Fort Worth, and M. W. Vernon, Blanket; four daughters, Mrs. L. A. Roden. Fort Worth; Mrs. Halle Garett, May; Mrs. Mottle Kirkland, Mount Calm, and Mrs. Tina Cohen, Tatum, N. M.; 24 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Shannon's Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
