The Civil War began when Thomas was seventeen years old. He enlisted in the Confederate Army in the Georgia Infantry 22nd Regiment Company D on November 16, 1861. His brother James Waldrip was also enlisted. They fought in most of the major battles, Seven Pines, Malvern Hill, Manassas II, Gettysburg, Chancellorsville, and Petersburg. With Robert E Lee troops surrendered at Appomattox, Virginia on 9 April 1865.
Thomas married Sarah Ellen Harris in 1865 in Gilmer County, Georgia. They lived in Georgia until about 1878 before moving to Marshall County, Alabama. They had seven children; Joanna Drucilla Waldrip Cantrell, Henry White Waldrip, Franklin Nimrod Waldrip, Nancy Katherine Waldrip Eubanks, Twin Daughter Cantrell 1877- 1877. Sophronia Emeline Waldrip Eubanks, and William Thomas Waldrip.
Thomas contracted typhoid fever and died on August 31, 1897. He was buried in the Rocky Mount Cemetery, Arab, Marshall County, Alabama.
