Daughter of John Vardy - Esther Black

First husband was Elijah Newton Canafax. He was born 2 February 1839 and died 18 March 1864. He came home from the Civil War due to consumption and died 10 miles north of Weatherford.

After Elijah passed away, Drusilla married Robert Montgomery on June 3, 1865. Robert Montgomery was born February 11, 1797 in North Carolina.

On March 4, 1871, Robert Montgomery was murdered at the front gate to his home near Carter by a man who he thought stole the beautiful black horse he had recently purchased from General John Magruder. A large reward was offered, and John Lewis Mayfield was captured and convicted of the murder. While sitting in jail waiting to be hanged Mayfield somehow escaped. In 1876, Texas Rangers John Armstrong and T. W. Deggs tracked him down and killed the murderer, John Lewis Mayfield, when he resisted arrest in Wilson County, Texas.

The following two sources back up the information:
1) The book, "200 Texas Outlaws and Lawmen 1835-1935" by Laurence Yadon, Dan Anderson, and Robert Smith, 2008, Page # 41.
2) "Galveston Daily News," Tuesday December 12, 1876, Page # 2.

After the death of her second husband, Drusilla Montgomery took her family to Eastland County, Texas where she lived until her death. They used the post office at Cottonwood and attended the church at Sabanno.
