George M. "Little Mike" was born in Bardstown, Kentucky. Medical reports from the VA Hospital reflect that he was close to his mother and recalls going to the movies with his older brother, J. Wathen "Mike" Fowler. He completed four elementary grades in two years and graduated from his high school, St. Joseph's Prep School, at age 16.
He worked at a dry-cleaners during his school years, earning $1.50 per week, plus $1.35 from his paper route. Before entering the service, he held a number of jobs, including clerking in restaurants and liquor stores and selling insurance.
He entered military service in 1942, serving in World War II and was honorably discharged in 1944. Following his discharge he worked in various jobs. When his illnesses became too bad for him to work, he entered Little Sisters of the Poor, a Catholic rest home, where he would remain until he passed away. He was well-liked at this facility and helped in the kitchen. The sisters remarked that he was intelligent and easy-going.
Little Mike passed away after a brief illness. He never married and had no children.
