Evelyn Cantor Lazarus Greenberg carried on a family tradition of giving to others. She continued charitable works throughout her life. Mrs. Greenberg died Thursday at the Jewish Home of Central New York after a long illness. She was 87 and lived at 948 Meadowbrook Drive. Mrs. Greenberg was born in Syracuse, the daughter of Abraham and Fanny Cantor. Her father was the owner of Cantor's Furniture Store at 709 S. Townsend St. The family home at 658 Madison St. was known as a place where to find food or money if one was in need. Mrs. Greenberg was an accomplished pianist. As children, she and her brother, Moses, a violinist, played during silent movies at downtown theaters. Mrs. Greenberg lived several years in Tennessee and North Carolina. During World War II , as a civilian working for the Army, she was superintendent of clothing and textiles at Fort Bragg, N.C. After the war she became director of salesmanship for Allied Stores which included Dey Brothers in Syracuse. Mrs. Greenberg was president of Vergren Builders Inc., a home improvement company in Syracuse, until her retirement in the 1970s. She was a member of Temple Adath Yeshurun and a life member of Hadassah. Her husband, Murray, died in 1963. Surviving are a son, Larry Sherman of Great Neck, former sports editor of the Long Island Press; and two grandchildren, Charles Sherman of Los Angeles and Flory Sherman of Mesa, Ariz. Services will be at 10 a.m. Sunday at Birnbaum Funeral Chapel, Rabbi Charles S. Sherman and Cantor Harold Lerner officiating. Burial will be in Workman's Circle Cemetery.
