Mary Bruce Word Stovall was born at Staples, Texas in Guadalupe County on October 12, 1870, daughter of Charles Hazelwood Word and Sarah Vance Acklin McGehee. She attended Coronal Institute in San Marcos. She began teaching in the San Antonio Independent School District in September 1911 and retired in 1940. She was known to almost every member of her extended family as "Aunt Mary."
