Great Falls Tribune (MT), 28 April 1921
Fort Shaw Pioneer, 57, Is Dead. Mrs. Mariah Smart Came to Montana for First Time 40 Years Ago
A resident of Montana for 40 years, Mrs. Mariah Smart, aged 57 years, died in Great Falls Wednesday morning. She first lived in Bozeman when she came to this state but later removed to a ranch in the vicinity of Fort Shaw, which remained her home.
She is survived by her husband, W.H. Smart, of Fort Shaw; by her mother, Mrs. C.J. Whitaker of Bozeman; by two sons, Walter and Harvey, both of Fort Shaw; and four daughters, Mrs. H. Newell of Great Falls, Mrs. H.E. Knutson of Fort Shaw and Mrs. Charles Morse and Mrs. E. Thurman of Seattle.
Funeral services will be held for Mrs. Smart from the O'Connor undertaking rooms Friday afternoon at 1 o'clock, with Rev. Daniel Bryant officiating. Burial will be in Highland cemetery.

Contributor "In Memory Of" (48722945) thinks the name of her mother as shown in this article as Mrs. C. J. Whitaker is in error. She also indicates that on various census and documents the name Whitaker is spelled Whitaker, Whiteaker, and Whittaker. Her death certificate shows her father as Harvey Whitacker. Because of all these various spellings I have accepted the links she provided for the parents.
