Civil War Union Brevet Major General. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was a teacher when he enlisted as a Private in the 69th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Promoted to Captain, he distinguished himself at the first Battle of Bull Run and was made Lieutenant Colonel in command of the regiment in 1862. In 1863, he was promoted Colonel in command of 170th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment in the Army of the Potomac. Appointed Brigadier General in 1864, he commanded the 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, 2nd Army Corps, in Washington D.C. until the end of the war. For meritorious service, he was brevetted Major General of US Volunteers on April 9, 1865. After the war, he resumed teaching and served as a US Customs agent. He died of cancer.
