Stanley L. Adams, 70, Sherrill, died Tuesday, March 17, 2009 at home of a massive heart attack.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 21, at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Sherrill. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 20, at Hoffmann Schneider and Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, Dubuque, where there will be a prayer service held at 7:45 p.m. Burial will be in Ss. Peter and Paul Cemetery. Military Honors will be accorded.

He was born on March 27, 1938, in Rickardsville, Iowa, son of Lawrence and Irene (Freiburger) Adams and received his education in the rural schools in North Buena Vista, Iowa. He married Sharon K. Cook on October 7, 1961, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, North Buena Vista. He built their first home in Sherrill before starting to farm in the Sherrill area in 1966. He worked at the former Dubuque Packing Company until his retirement in 1980, after 24 years. He also worked at Central Range in Dubuque from 1992-2004.

He was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Sherrill, Iowa; he served in the Iowa Army National Guard from 1959-1965 where he attained the rank of Sergeant while serving in Headquarters Company, 3rd of the 133rd Infantry battalion; was a member of the Dubuque County Farm Bureau, Dubuque County Zoning and Planning Commission, and was formerly a volunteer fire fighter for the Sherrill Fire Department.

He was passionate about spending time with his family, enjoyed the outdoors, dancing, deer hunting, playing cards, remodeling and could fix anything. Stan recently restored a 1955 Farmall 400 tractor. He especially cherished taking his grandchildren fishing and being a winter Texan.

Surviving are his wife, Sharon Adams, of Sherrill; his children, Kevin (Cindy) Adams, of Sherrill, and their children, Matthew and Justin; Kristine (Jerry) Weitz, of Dubuque, and their children Austin, Connor and Erica; Kathy (Mike) Kirby, of Omaha, Nebraska, and their children, Simon and Mason; and Kurt (Veronica) Adams, of Corpus Christi, Texas and their children, K.C., Hunter, and Christen; a brother, Tarry (Carol) Adams, of Somonauk, Illinois; a brother Richard, of Gilroy, California; and mother-in-law Eleanor Cook of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Irene Adams, his brother Parry, sister-in-law Patsy Adams, and his father-in-law, Charles Cook, brothers-in-law Dale Cook and Leon Cook, and nephew Aaron Newhard.
