Film Number: 002251960Donald E. Redman of Amherst, age 86, passed away Thursday, January 8, 2015, at his residence.
He was born in Amherst where he resided most of his life. He graduated from Amherst High School in 1946, and from Kent State University in 1954 with a Bachelor of Education, and followed by a Master's Degree in Administration in 1957 from Bowling Green State University. After teaching in Sandusky for nine years and the county for two years, he returned to Amherst where he spent 21 years of happy, productive, and successful years of teaching.
His interests were eclectic. He was an avid reader reader and enjoyed the piano. He had an extensive flower garden from which he supplied many local businesses as well as the Amherst library and hospital with summer bouquets.
For thirty plus years he fired his own pottery shop either throwing pots or making free-hand objects. His pots have found a home both locally and in many of the states.
In the late 70's he started bicycling again which turned out to be more than a casual pastime as he rode over 50,000 miles before he finally finished riding. This included rides to Michigan, Indiana, and Burlington, Vermont, plus a transcontinental ride in 1989.
After retiring he and his wife "Fritz" spent time touring much of the United States, being especially fond on the Southwest.
He is survived by his son Marc of Indiana, three grandchildren, William, Shameh', Enock, all of Indiana, two great granddaughters Kori and Aria, and his brother Jim of West Virginia.
Don was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years Eleanor "Fritz" (2007) and his daughter-in-law Becky (2009).
Family will receive friends Monday, 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., at the Garland-Misencik Funeral Home, 851 Park Avenue, Amherst. Burial will follow in Brownhelm Cemetery, Vermilion.
