Prior to the war for Southern Independence Marshall was a member of the Charleston Light Dragoons and was later made quartermaster of the Palmetto Battalion, Light Artillery with the rank of captain. He saw active duty during the war on Fort Sumter and along the coast.
He was 5'10" tall with dark eyes and dark hair.
