An Alexander Ciy soldier has been killed in the Persian Gulf. Spec. Thomas Randall Jarrell, 20, a member of the 214th MP Co. National Guard Unit from Alexander City, died Monday from an accidental rifle wound to the chest.
A spokesperson for the Casualty Branch of Fort Gordon, GA., where the 214th was activated, said Jarrell died in Sudia Arabia on March 4, but could not release any more specific information about the location of the accident.
Jarrell's parents, Jeff and Tera Rice of Alex City, were notified by a Casualty Assistance Team from Fort Benning, GA., Monday night. Jarrell is survived by his 17 year old wife, Misty T. Jarrell.
Steve Walden, who lives next door spoke with Army officials, they told him what had happened. "They were sitting in a jeep, him and another boy, and the other boy was cleaning his rifle and it discharged and hit Randy in the chest," Walden said.
Jarrell, a 1990 graduate of BRHS, had been in the National Guard for three years, Walden said.

Services for Thomas Randall "Randy" Jarrell, 20, of Alex City will be held today, Tuesday, March 12, 1991 at 2 p.m. at Heritage Chapel Funeral Home with full military rites. Burial will be at Hillview Memorial Park. The Rev. Rudy Tidwell, the Rev. James Cullins and Army Chaplain David McGowan will officiate.
Mr. Jarrell died March 3, 1991, in Saudi Arabia.
He was born in Tallapoosa County April 18 1970, the son of Carlton Donald Jarrell and Tera Jean Fuller.
Mr Jarrell was employed with Russel Corp. and the Alabama Army National Guard.
He was a life long resident of Tallapoosa County, a 1990 graduate of Benjamin Russell High School and a member of Ray Baptist Church.
Mr.Jarrell i servived by his father, Carlton D. Jarrell of Odessa, TX; his mother and step father Tera and Jeffie Rice of Alex City; His wife Misti Thornton Jarrell of Alex City; one brother Allen Rice of Alex City; one sister Donna Jarrell of Alex City; his grandparents, Joe and Jean Jarrell of Lafayette, and Weldon and Sarah Fuller of Alex City; and his step grandparents, Jeffie M. Rice Sr. and Willie Lee Rice of Alex City.
Flowers will be accepted by the family or memorial contributions may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Assocation.
Heritage Chapel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
