Shiflett served as an engine and power train repairman in the 618th Maintenance Company, 62nd Maintenance Battalion, 45th General Support Group,1st Logistical Command. He lost his life on May 11, 1969, as a result of multiple fragmentation wounds sustained from an enemy mortar attack near Pleiku in Kontum Providence, South Vietnam.
