WAHOO – William Leslie Novak, 87, entered his eternal rest on March 14.
Novak was born Oct. 25, 1921, to Louis J. and Frances (Pallas) Novak on the family farm near Malmo.
On October 11, 1952, he married LaVerne Saathoff and to this union was born their daughter, Tereasa (Terri) Ann.
He was a life member of the Czech Presbyterian Church of rural Wahoo. He was an ordained Elder, served on the Centennial Committee, the Cemetery Committee and was a member of the Hilltoppers. He was a 4-H leader and served as assistant swine superintendent of the county fair for a number of years. They made their home on the family farm, which they purchased in 1953, raising corn, soybeans, hogs and cattle. He also worked at the Malmo elevator for a number of years. He loved to work with wood. He built their house on the farm and either built or rebuilt every one of the buildings. After retirement he started making wood toys, which turned into a small business attending craft shows. He also loved to travel. After his daughter made him go camping the first time, they ended up buying a motor home and traveled all of the states west, south and north. He never wanted to go east of Nebraska except for going into Iowa and Missouri to a Kansas City Royals baseball game. He enjoyed life to the fullest. In 2004, due to his failing health they moved to Omaha to be closer to their daughter and family. In 2006 his health forced him to become a resident at Parsons House on Eagle Run.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Louis, Henry and Charles Novak; and sisters, Henrietta Dvorak, Mildred Pacal, Alyce Nau and Wilma Bejvancesky.
He leaves his wife, LaVerne; daughter, Terri and husband Lonn Harlan; granddaughter, Heather and husband Mike Edwards; grandson, Alan Novak Harlan; great-grandson, Cole Novak Edwards, all of Omaha; brother-in-law, Keith (Lupe) Saathoff of North Platte; sister-in-law, Ruth Novak Kalkwarf of Crete; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
