She perhaps in her later teens met the newly-appointed postmaster of Birmingham, J.A. Bigelow, and was impressed with his recent service in the late war.
The "Detroit Daily Post" on 30 May 1866 reported the marriage of Isabel Whitehead to John Allen Bigelow on 24 May 1866 at Mt. Zion Church in Pontiac, Michigan, they being joined together by Minister O. Taylor.
(Mt. Zion is currently known as All Saint's Church)
Three children were born to this marriage:
Capt. Mortimer Osborne Bigelow, U. S. A.;
Bertha Alliene, who was married September 25, 1902, to Mr. I. H. Neff, he being a member of the medical staff of the Eastern Michigan Asylum at Pontiac; and
Elizabeth "Bessie" E. Bigelow.
