Lucy Ensworth was born about 1850 in Indiana. She was the daughter of John D. Ensworth and Eliza Dagenet Ensworth. Lucy's mother passed away in 1856 and her father passed away in 1858. Her maternal grandmother, Mary Ann Dagenet Peoria, traveled from the Kansas territory (Lykins aka Miami county), and took Lucy and her siblings, Mary, Alice, and John, back to the grandmother's home in the Kansas territory. Lucy and her siblings are listed in the 1860 U.S. Census with their grandmother.

According to a transcribed interview conducted with Lucy's sister-in-law Emma Labadie Ensworth (1937), Lucy's father was white and her mother was a member of the Brothertown Tribe of New York.
