James Alford Crocker was born is Mississippi in 1865. He was the son of David, born in 1834, and Martha Crocker of Alabama. James married Kathryn Lorinda Barnett. This information was taken from her brother Chuckie's Bible. He as an old bachelor who lived with John David Crocker. James and Kathryn were married in Madison County in 1887. James (Jim) Crocker was born in 1865 and died in 1929. Kate Crocker died in 1946. Kate is said to be part Cherokee. James liked to fish and he would bring fish home, and Kate would burn them as she didn't like them. After James (Jim) died, Kate went to live with her son, Alford and Carrie. One of them would have to go tell her to come eat each meal. She would drag her chair to the table, eat, then drag it back. They each had their own chair. In the winter one sat on each side of the fireplace, and in the summer it was that way on the front porch. He wanted biscuits and corn bread on the table three times a day. He also had two kinds of gravy; one with flour and another with meal. If they were on the "outs" with one another, they could go for weeks without speaking, some call it the "Crocker Sulls." Their children were John David, William Alford, Henry Irvin, Mary Ellen, Susie, Ollie F. and Alice. (Submitted by Alene Crocker for A History of Madison County, Texas)
