1918 - 2009

William F. Burgess, St. Joseph, passed away Saturday, March 14, 2009, at Heartland Regional Medical Center.
William was born on April 12, 1918, in McCook, Neb., to William J. and Sadie (Jefferies) Burgess.
He attended Layola College in Chicago and then was a graduate of NYC.
He worked as a traffic engineer for the cities of St. Joseph and Tyler, Texas. He worked as an investigator in the insurance industry and had later started a salvage metal business.
He had received two citations for Outstanding Engineer Service with the U.S. Government. He had also received the Ford Foundation Award for Engineer of the Year in St. Joseph.
William was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council No. 571 and the Safety Council of Chicago.
William was preceded in death by his parents; wife Bertha E. (Schrupp) Burgess; one son, William R. Burgess; four brothers and four sisters.
Survivors include his son, Ross Burgess; two daughters, Marcia A. Hughes and Toni Goodwin, all of St. Joseph; brothers, Jack Burgess, of Alabama, Chester "Bud" Burgess, Washington, Ind., and Gary Burgess, St. Joseph; one sister, Evelyn Hakes, Reno, Nev.; grandson, Andrew Goodwin, St. Joseph; two granddaughters, Alisha Roberts and Angela Reynolds, both of St. Joseph; three great-grandchildren, Jaxson, Carter and Pierce Roberts, all of St. Joseph; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary Catholic Church. Interment: Mount Olivet Cemetery, St. Joseph. Visitation will begin after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, where a Rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. Visitation will follow until 8:30 p.m.
The family suggests memorials to St. Joseph Humane Society or to Birthright of St. Joseph.
