Floyd was born in Stonewall, Smith County, Tennessee. He came to California while in his teens and went to work for the Madera Sugar Pine Lumber Company as a herder on the flume. When the Lumber Company shut down, he turned to operating a dairy farm and later raised black angus cattle along with alfalfa and cotton.
