Robert Welts was born in Hunterdon County, New Jersey on 30 May 1783, the son of John Welts. John was born of immigrant parents, Jacob and Anna Maria Welts on 28 June (9 July) 1752 in Williams Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. He died 27 September 1834 in East Bloomfield, New York after living moat of his life in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. Robert married Frances Opdycke, the daughter of Richard Opdycke and Grace Thatcher on 10 January 1807 in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. The Opdycke family was a fifth generation family in the United States at that time. He lived in New Jersey until about 1828 when he moved his family to E. Bloomfield, Ontario County, New York. He was a farmer and owned land in each of the areas he lived. His sons Richard and John also owned land in New York. In 1835 Robert moved his family to the Macomb County area and owned a 300 acre farm on the edge of Mount Clemens. Robert's sister, Mary, and brother, Issac and family also came to the Macomb area about the same time. Robert's family consisted of four sons and three daughters., The oldest son John, born 27 Oct. 1807, remained in New York, with his wife Charlotte and five children.
