At 3 AM on March 26 a fast-moving, and deadly fire swept thru the all-wood three-story San Antonio Country Club House, burning it to the ground. Killed were six persons; five guests and one employee.

The guests who perished were Mrs. Maco Stewart, Judge James Edward Webb Sr., couple James D. and Mary Walthall, and Mr. Homer Jones. Mrs. Cockrell was the employee who perished.

Mrs. Cockrell left behind two small daughters, aged 2 and 5 years.
