MARIE PHILOMENA MORAS/ MORRIS COTA BROWN

Marie Philomena MORAS/Morris was born on July 29, 1838, in St-Pierre-les-Becquets, Quebec, Canada; daughter of her father, Eustache MORAS, was 24, and her mother, Elizabeth MAILHOT, was 27. She married 1st to Narcisse "Nelson" Cote/Cota. They had one son and two daughters between 1860 and 1864.
She married 2nd July 13 1972 to Justin Brown and moved to Colusa, CA She died as a young mother on November 14, 1872, in Colusa, California, at the age of 34, and was buried in Colusa, California. Her son remained in Colusa with his step father, Justin Brown, until moving to Washington.
The daughters were returned to Grass Valley and placed in the Mount Saint Mary's Orphanage School where they stayed for several years before their Uncle Frank "Francis" Frank Morris Moras took control of them.

Maria Philomena Morris married Narcisse (Nelson) Cote in Manchester, NH Dec 12,1859 per her divorce papers. According to St. Ann's Church she married Narcisse Cotte on Nov 27 1859 (this may be the date of the license). ST. Anne' staff were unable to find an actual marriage certificate.. The Cote's left New Hampshire for Grass Valley in 1859 arriving sometime in 1860 (per statement by sister in law Lucinda Cota wife of Mithell during the divorce).
We next find them operating a soloon near the Eureka Mine in Nevada County in 1867 (per Bean's History, Nevada County)). Maria Philomena divorced Nelson in 1868 in Grass Valley, CA. She was French canadian and spoke french fluently.
Her daughter Josephine Cote/Cota Van Marter wrote a "JOURNAL" about her life with her mother, sisters, brother and uncles.

Maria/Mary P. Morris and Nelson/Narcisse had three children, Josephine Cota (Van Marter), Napoleon Nelson Cota & Lucinda Cota (Gallagher).

After she divorced Nelson she married a very wealthy man and Saloonkeeper Justin Brown who owned allot of land and businesses in Colusa, CA. They moved to Colusa, where she died shortly thereafter.

She was survived by her brothers Moses Morris, Francis Morris; sisters Amelia (Charles) Richards and Eliza (Leon) Durbin. Maria's brother Francis "Frank" Morris took control of the care of her children (Napoleon, Lucinda and Josephine) after her death and placed them in the Catholic Boarding/Orphanage School.

According to the JOURNAL the headstone was very very large. It must have fallen and broke over the years, because it is about 5 feet tall now
